Itinerary

After landing at the Tribhuwan International Airport, we will be greeted by a representative of Himalayan Trip Nepal who will drop us off at our hotel. We then check-in at the hotel, freshen up and take a rest. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Early morning, you will fly to Pokhara from domestic terminal of Tribhuwan International Airport. Our office representative will pick you from the airport and transfer you to the hotel. You will have a half day sightseeing around Pokhara city.

You can even visit around lakeside region or you can go for boating at famous Fewa Lake. Overnight at Pokhara.

As the flight from Pokhara to Jomsom cannot be guaranteed to take off (the schedule is dependent on the weather), the first night on this particular trek should always be spent in Kagbeni. The trekking permit for Upper Mustang is date specific. You can enter on or after the date specified on your permit but not before. Kagbeni itself is an entrancing, medieval-style village so it won’t be time wasted. Plus sleeping in Kagbeni (2800m) on the first night allows for some acclimatisation time before heading higher once you start the trek.

It is possible to drive from Pokhara to Jomsom and sometimes even as far as Kagbeni. Bank on at least seven hours to get as far as Jomsom, and depending on the state of the road at the time, be prepared for a bumpy ride for at least 50% of the journey.

Today starts with a short walk through the village to the official checkpoint, where it takes about 30 minutes to complete formalities. Thereafter you are allowed to enter Upper Mustang and it’s quite uncanny, but literally crossing the border takes you into another world; the scenery instantly changes and the Kali Gandaki Gorge opens up before you.

If the riverbed is navigable (i.e. dry) then it is possible to walk straight along it for the first 30 minutes or so and avoid the long haul up and over the ridge to the east. If not, the first hour of the trek will be spent tackling this ridge. After passing the small village of Tiri Gaon to your west, it is necessary to pick up the high path anyway and follow it all the way to Tangbe.

This is the first major settlement along the route. From here the path climbs and hugs the mountainside until finally reaching Chhusang . This whole section takes around 5 hours.

Soon after leaving Chele you start to climb and this continues for at least a couple of hours. It is a tough walk to the morning’s first destination, the village of Samar, along what is known as the ‘Canyon Cliff Road’.

This is a fair description as the path is very narrow in places and there are some sheer drops thrown in for good measure. You also cross two passes between Chele and Samar, the Taklam La (3624m) and the Dajori La (3736m) and all things considered, this is a hard few hours of trekking.

Samar is a good place to have lunch (at the Annapurna Guesthouse) and then, after leaving the village, it is necessary to head all the way down to the river and then all the way back up again in order to continue on the trail. This section takes at least an hour and when you look back to where you started you will notice that as the crow flies, you have covered hardly any distance whatsoever.

The walking only gets tougher and it’s a hard slog up for almost all of the rest of the day. To compensate, the views in this section of the trail are outstanding. Syangboche is a tiny place but it still has four teahouses.

We ascend to the Yamda La pass at 3,850m. On the way, we pass by a few teahouses, chortens and beautiful villages. We trek through poplar forests and barley fields and reach Nyi Pass at 4,010m.

From here, we descend to Ghami which is one of the biggest villages in the Lo region. The village is beautiful with fields surrounding the entire village. Overnight in Ghami.

Our trek today begins with a descent through a rough and often slippery trail. We then cross a suspension bridge over the Ghami Khola and begin ascending. The pathway is beautiful with mani walls along the trail.

Next, we cross the Tsarang La Pass at 3870m and reach Tsarang village. The village lies atop the Charang Chu canyon with a huge fortress and a red gompa towards its east. Overnight in Tsarang.

We begin our trek by descending to a canyon and cross a river before beginning our uphill trek to Lo La pass which at 3950m. From the top of the pass we can admire the beautiful Lo Manthang village. From the pass we descend to Lo Manthang which is a beautiful walled village.

From here the views of the Himalayas including Nilgiri, Tilicho and Annapurna I, Bhrikuti Peak as well as Damodar Kunda (pond) is quite good. Overnight in Lo-Manthang.

Lo Manthang is a walled town of the remote Upper Mustang region of Nepal. We spend the day touring three major gompas of the town namely Jhampa, Thupchen and Chhoeda. All of these gompas have undergone expert restoration over the last two decades.

We can also trek to Tingkhar which is a beautiful village located north-west of Lo-Mangthang. Overnight in Lo Manthang.

You will drive back to Jomsom retracing the trail. You will pass the same beautiful village of Tsarang, Ghami, Ghiling, Samar and reach Kagbeni. Special permit check out at Kagbeni.

Then, we will drive back to Jomsom. After reaching Jomsom, rooms will be assigned. You can explore the market area of Jomsom until dinner.

We take an early morning flight to Pokhara. The airplane passes through a gorge between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains making the flight itself an amazing experience. After arriving in Pokhara, we can explore pokhara and evening time fly out to Kathmandu or if you have a time you can spent a night at Pokhara.

There are a few options for getting back to Pokhara. Firstly, there is the flight but remember the schedule is dependent on the weather so you will need to be flexible with your onward plans.

Alternatively, it is possible to drive from Jomsom to Pokhara either by jeep/4WD or bus. Both modes of transport take at least 9 hours to complete the journey plus the road is very rough in parts and prone to landslides.

You may have time to take care of any last minute shopping or sightseeing, as time permits. We hope that you have enjoyed your journey!.
